Get fit for summer

Hello Everyone!!

The sun is shining and how lovely is it to see a blue sky and smiles all around :L

How many of you are now getting out those trainers and workout clothes to get your butt into gear to get that summer body?? Well, I am too!! I'm turning my workouts up a notch!

Theres so much evidence out there that suggests and proves cardio as the best type of exercise to lose weight! However, I have found for those of you who want to get toned, lean and mean, you’ve got to switch up your long cardio routines for routines that incorporate high intensity cardio, strength training, and stretching.

Who's heard of Circuit workouts? This is the way forward for that summer body you desire! Why?........Well, circuit workouts are based on the idea that you keep moving, not taking breaks or allowing your heart rate to drop. This keeps the calories and fat constantly burning. For example, you might drop and give me 30 pushups, then directly into squats with calf raises – no stopping to switch the song on your iPod and towel off.

My favorite thing about these workouts is that you can do them almost anywhere, and they’re fast. I find I work harder in these types of classes than if i were to go to the gym for 2 hours. I understand it is not everyones cup of tea... BUT don't knock it until you've tried it a few times.

My circuit workouts include lunges, squats, pushups, hula hooping, skipping, strength training and kick backs with two-three minute intervals of high cardio work followed by stretching to finish the class off. By the end my clients are so physically exhausted that they can barely move BUT they also feel fantastic!! This isn’t all you can do, fitness fiends – you can incorporate hundreds of different exercises into your workouts to keep things from getting boring and avoid hitting a plateau. Also, its great for those of you who play a sport, you can tailor the circuit to your sport to get a great workout as well as training for the sport you play. It is usually used for team sports like football, rugby and netball, but also used for boxing. Every month I change up the workouts to prevent boredem and keep motivation levels up!

So... The best bit.... What are the benefits of doing circuit workouts?

1. They’re fast – mine are only 20 - 30 minutes, so I usually add 20 minutes in total of interval cardio sprints or some more targeted strength training afterwards. If you’re a bad-ass, you can repeat the circuit again.
2. You burn more calories than if you were to just do cardio or weights, because you’re mixing both types of exercise and it’s at a high intensity - this is why I and many others LOVE it!!
3. You’re constantly changing exercises, so it’s difficult to get bored. If you get bored, make a friend work out with you – at least watching them struggle through it is entertaining
4. You’re working more than one muscle group at a time, so it’s a very effective and time-efficient workout plan. Butt, thighs, biceps, and shoulders? Yes, please.
5. Each exercise generally lasts 60 seconds, which you can repeat as a mantra when you’re tempted to stop because it hurts (that means it’s working).
6. Since the workouts are so short, you do NOT have the excuse of being too busy to exercise.
7. Circuit training burns tons of fat, since you’re mixing intense cardio and strength training. It’s the best of both worlds!
