Make your own Sports Drink....

Good Afternoon everyone!!

My blog today is targeted at those sporting individuals out there! It has been inspired from the London marathon last Sunday (Well done to everyone who ran it - amazing achievement) So, whether you are a marathon runner, rugby player or a gymnast there is a homemade sports drink for you!!

Sports drinks are really easy to make - not to mention a lot cheaper than buying expensive bottles in shops. All you need are a few ingredients and a little bit of imagination.

There are three main types of sports drinks; isotonic, hypertonic and hypotonic. Each drink serves a different purpose depending on what type of training you are doing.

ISOTONIC DRINKS – (most popular) They are designed to quickly replace the fluids which are lost by sweating and also provide a boost of carbohydrates. This type of drink is the choice for most athletes – usually long distance running and team sports but all professional sports people use them in their daily regimes.

The body prefers to use glucose as its source of energy, therefore it may be appropriate to consume Isotonic drinks where the carbohydrate source is glucose in a concentration of 6-8%.

Want to make you own?
Drink option 1:
You will need:
• 200ml ordinary fruit squash
• 800ml water
• A pinch of salt
Mix them all together in a jug and cool down in fridge.

Drink option two:
You will need:
• 500ml unsweetened fruit juice (orange, apple, pineapple)
• 500ml water
Mix them all together in a jug and cool down in fridge.

Drink option Three:
You will need:
• 50-70g sugar
• One litre of warm water
• Pinch of salt
• 200ml of sugar free squash
Mix, cool and drink

These options are also the healthier way of consuming a sports drink as you really don't know what is put into the expensive sports drinks out on the shelves today, such as lucozade sport, boots isotonic etc.

Happy Friday Everyone!!
