It is the 4th of July (also independence day) and Wimbledon Tennis is in full swing! I have been trying to keep up with the tennis as it is a great sport to play and watch. I am slightly gutted about the Nadal result as I love watching him play, was sad to see him go so soon. Anyway, Since Wimbledon 2012 has started, there has been nothing but talk on the tele and in magazines about the beautiful strawberries being served there. Strawberries are synonymous with Wimbledon, and this year for the ninth year running, all the strawberries served at The Championships 2012 (25 June-8 July), will be LEAF Marque certified. This means they have been produced to a high environmental standard.
So, this has got me thinking about whats currently in season in Britain and what tastes best at this time of year! July is a great month for legumes, herbs and berries.
Firstly, Berries: British grown raspberries are everywhere at this time of year and they are so delicious you can't help but eat them straight from the punnet! These berries also go wonderful on cereal for breakfast, in yoghurts for a snack, in a fruit salad for desert and, the one i love doing is popping them into a glass of water to refreshen up your drink or add them to a cocktail... Delicious!!
Strawberries, blackcurrants, gooseberries and blueberries are also growing in abundance - these are also great in drinks, and great to whip up into a smoothie. I LOVE Blueberries and could have them all day! Try them on your cereal, with dark chocolate, in yoghurts, drinks, as a snack, with a handful of almonds or into a smoothie! They are so full of antioxidants too and great for burning waist fat. If you are not a fan of berries then give them another try, especially when they are in season as they are at their best!! You can find them in most supermarkets or markets stalls.
Peas and beans: Peas are sweet and snappy and the first runner beans have arrived. Broad beans are best now at the beginning of their season, as they get a bit tough and bitter by the end.
Herbs: Parsley, thyme, mint and basil should be growing like crazy. Use basil to make your own pesto or add fresh roughly picked leaves to your pasta dishes, toss mint through salads, add to fruit salads and deserts such as eaten mess, or squeeze down to make a mint tea and add to refreshing summer drinks - add to a large jug of water with lemon and lime or some berries.
Fish: Sardines, herring and mackerel: These fish are ideal for the barbecue and great in freshing salads. Look out for those from Cornish waters at this time of the year. All these types of fish are extremely good for you too, providing plenty of omega 3.
Flat fish: Plaice, Dover sole and lemon sole are excellent at this time of year. Serve simply with a squeeze of lemon and parsley.
Meat Lamb is a terrific meat in summer - perfect for barbecues.
Forget what the weathers like at the moment and just Enjoy the best of British summer food and drink
