This month I have had a few individual's struggle with winter snacking. Lets be honest, we don't always want to snack on cold fresh or frozen fruit everyday of the year.. frankly, it gets quite boring!
What's the best snacking strategy? Each snack should contain protien, fibre and vitamins. Have your cheese with cherry tomatoes and grapes, enjoy your hummous with carrots and wholemeal pitta/crackers. This way you may eat fewer calories and feel fuller for longer. Another great part to your snack should be NUTS
A new study I read, found snacking on different types of nuts can help you reach your weight loss goal, because some of the fat they contain isn’t fully absorbed, so you feel satisfied for longer without putting on the pounds!
It is recommended to choose the kind with the shells still on as they claim you will eat 41% less than if you buy pre shelled ones. Take a look at the benefits of the nuts below and see how you can add them to your daily diet:
Pistachios
30g = 159 cals
These little nuts have the highest level of cholesterol lowering plant sterols. These are great snacks to enjoy on their own – take a small bag of pistachios and have them on your desk at work to pick at when feeling slightly peckish or have them in a bag or pocket so you always have something good to snack on if you feel you are flagging.
Almonds
30g = 163cal
These are a top source of monounsaturated fat which helps burn off belly fat. I love adding almonds to no fat yoghurts with fruit or on top of my cereal with blueberries.
Walnuts
30g = 185 cals
Walnuts are loaded with omega-3 fats for glowing skin and a healthy heart. Add these too salads and cereals and they are also great crumbled up and added to low fat ice cream for a treat
Brazil nuts
30g = 186 cals
This nut is one of the best sources of cancer fighting selenium. These can add an extra crunch to cereals along with fruit salads and go great with raisins and dried fruit.
Hazelnuts
30g = 178 cals
Packed with heart friendly folate along with calcium. These can also be enjoyed on their own.
Give these nuts a try as your daily snack and see if they can be added to other foods to make a tastier and not so boring snack.
It’s worth shelling out on nuts!!
