Where's the sugar lurking?

Beware the hidden dangers of sugars in food and drink... 'FAT FREE' doesn't mean 'SUGAR FREE'.

A really interesting clip of where sugar can be hidden and what it is doing to our children. 

Top Tips
Check the labels on food and drink for sugar content - look for the carbohydrates of which sugars value and aim for 5g of total sugars or less per 100g. 

Children should be aiming for 2 pieces of fruit daily due to the sugar content - if consumed too much of it can still damage the teeth and store as fat! 

Sports drinks and energy drinks shouldn't be used for children at any time, even during sports performance, these types of drinks contribute to weight gain, tooth decay and are full of calories. 

Working in Luton town I was on a stall promoting our service and a lady came up to me and noticed the sugar drinks display we had, she said to me 'you don't need to tell me about what those drinks to you' and pulled up her top lip and displayed gums, she had no top teeth at all and claimed this was all due to drinking 10-12 cans of red bull daily. At the time she was telling me this, she had a red bull can in her hand, sipping on it.

Message of todays blog: Please be careful and watch your sugar intake! Plenty of people keep an eye on their fat intake as there is so much in the news and in papers and on packages saying how bad fat is for us, however be sure to look at the sugar content too.. as I mentioned before, because it says 'low in fat' or 'no fat' does NOT mean no sugar. Be careful also with 'No added sugar' - think, how much sugar has it in already? Just think a little more wisely, especially when it comes to children's diet and health. 

Get rid of the sugar monster - it provides us with no nutritional benefits at all!
