Try growing your own health boosting garden and join the rest of people doing it..... A third of all people in the UK now grow their own! And I don't blame them, getting out in the garden can do wonders for your health! Not only can preparing the soil be great exercise, but surrounding yourself in nature and the outside is great for the mind!
Here are .... to grow to boost health and vitality:
1. Carrots
Remember being told as a kid by your parents to eat up all your carrots so you can see in the dark? This is because carrots are full of beta-carotene which is converted into vitamin A in the liver. Its then taken via the bloodstream to the retinas and converted into a purple pigment vital for night version. As well as vitamin A, carrots also have impressive amounts of vitamin B1, B2, C, D and E which help prevent illness.
These crunchy roots grow really well from seed - as long as the soil is free from stones. Keep them well watered and within a few weeks you will see you seedlings emerge
2. Tomatoes
Most of you probably know tomatoes contain a key cancer fighting antioxidant which protects the body against damage as well as the skin from ultra-violet rays. However, they are also a great source of potassium, essential for fluid balance in cells as well as heart rate and blood pressure control. They are also fill of immune-boosting Vitamin C...So get started!
It is really easy to grow tomatoes but I have read that it is recommended to buy young plants from your local garden centre. They do hanging basket varieties that trial which are great if you have a tiny plot/garden. You need to make sure they are in a sunny spot and remember to water them well. Hopefully, you will be able to pick them mid July
3. Chillies
Want some attractive to grow? Cayenne peppers are a good choice if you are going to grow some. These help prevent blood clots forming, lowering the risk of heart attack and stroke! I know I can hear some of you saying 'but they are hot and spicy' well, cayenne pepper is great for stomach problem - it helps healing wth both stomach and intestinal ulcers.
So...get sowing!! As with tomatoes, it's recommended to buy small plants from the garden centre. Place them in a sunny place, even a sunny windowsill will work, keep well watered and feed with a tomato fetilizer and pick the individual peppers once they've changed colour. These babies can be kept for years if you keep them dry in an airing cupboard
4. Garlic
Many of you may know how one small bulb, garlic is boosting with health!! It is antic bacterial, anti fungal and anti viral and regular consumption can help to reduce blood cholesterol and lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
These are also easy to grow and so much better than shop bought garlic! Buy your garlic gloves from a garden centre, split the head into individual cloves and throw away the smallest ones. Plant the rest in a really sunny spot, water lightly now and then and then hopefully you can simply pull up the plants come July, when the leaves have started turning a little yellow.
Good luck!! Hope it goes well
