Start small: Gradual changes are easiest to incorporate into the daily routine — and to maintain long term. Start by making a few small changes, such as turning off the TV during dinner, switching from soda to skim milk or water, and taking a family walk after dinner once a week.
Try to get active as a family for 1 hour this week!!
I conduct a circuits session for the families on the obesity scheme I work on! It involves a number of exercise stations which can range from skipping to hula hooping! Engaging in exercise and physical activity as a family can be a fun way to get everyone moving. Studies show that kids who feel supported by friends and family are more likely to get active and by getting active together improves relationships along with fitness!! Children need 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous activity every day, but it doesnt have to occur at once. It could be split into 10 minute slots throughout the day or 30 minutes in the morning and 30 mintues after/before dinner.
Try some of these ways to get you and your children active:
1. Buy your children a skipping rope or a kite to pay with
2. Encourage your child to join a sports club or an after school activity (this can also improve the childs social relationships).
3. Why not walk to and from school with your child?
4. Limit TV time to 2 hours a day - this includes computers and playstations etc.
5. Have a day once a week where the family go out for an activity day, such as swimming or cycling or a trip to the park!
6. If your children is overweight/obese then they can attend the Alive N Kicking summer activity sessions (aged 5-15) I will also be there
7. If you live in St Albans or Harpenden the St Albans Arts, Sports and Health development team are conducting summer sports and play session in local parks and open spaces. I will be your supervisor for most of the parks
Go ahead and take the first step to making some of these changes! Making small changes is key to success!
P.S. Healthy Solutions conducts a ladies fitness class which is similar to circuits in Barton Le Clay on Tuesdays and will be starting one soon in Luton!
