Binge Eating... is it really that bad for you?

Hello everyone,

After speaking to quite a few clients this week, family members and some of the children on the obesity scheme, plenty have claimed their little weight gain is due to the summer holidays! It is easily done... Whether you are off school and your eating patterns have changed or if you have been away on holiday and eaten more than what you would usually consume at home....I am sure we have all been in these situations.

How many of you admit eating more than usual or have a binge day or eating whatever and whenever? I’m sure most of us can agree that we all do it once in a while… You only live once right? Well, the 'pig out' summer holidays have encouraged me to write up a blog on binge eating and the effects, if any of this.

HOW BAD IS A DAY OF BINGE EATING?

1. Do you have high blood pressure?
2. Diabetes?
3. And/or high cholesterol?
If the answer is no to all of these then good news! Your body can deal with an occasional dietary day binge. However, You’ll store some of the extra fat and sugar and the surplus carbs and salt will make you retain water. So, for the next day or two (or in some cases I have had, 5 days ) you may feel bloated and uncomfortable and weigh a little more. But your body will compensate by releasing hormones to temporarily reduce your appetite, helping to balance things out.

That’s just a day binge… a weekend-long binge/feast can cause more trouble, though. In a study in the journal of clinical investigation, researchers examined the effects of palmitic acid, which is found in saturated fat, on leptin, a hormone that helps regulate appetite. This palmitic acid is known to inhibit your ability to regulate food intake when consumed in large quantities.

So try and stick to ONE cheat meal, not a whole weekend of them. Even better if you avoid a cheat meal altogether. Or is it too late and have you had a huge binge before the weekend has started? Well then try drink liquorice tea the next day…research has shown that the oil extract from the black stuff can increase fat loss and lower cholesterol – so that should help counteract a weekend pig-out on bacon butties.

For the time being, here are some facts for you to think about that may help you stop bingeing in the first place:

To burn off the energy in a bag of 30g crisps you would have to jog for 35 minutes.

To burn off the energy in a chocolate bar you have to jog for 60 minutes – for a king size snickers bar you would have to play a football match for 2 hours and 15 minutes! Shocking hay?

A large cheese and tomato pizza is the same amount of calories as a man is supposed to consume daily.

¼ of mayonnaise can be up to a whopping 1,000 calories – so if you enjoy dipping pizza into mayo then that is a big disaster!!

Fact: Having as many as 2 takeaways a week is enough to INCREASE your risk of type 2 diabetes. Next time you’re in a rush, think about this and opt for healthier option such as Covent garden soup options or still order a takeaway but go for something healthier – nothing fried, battered, with thick creamy sauces, high in salt or sugar and try to share the takeaway so it leads to you eating less.

Good luck!
