As of Monday 6th Jan I will be Alive N Kicking's Obesity Programme Co-ordinator and I am really excited to start as it will mean I will now have more time and plenty of topics for blogging along with more information, advice and tips on health, nutrition and fitness to share with you all. A good start to the new Year!
My first blog of the year I want to keep short and sweet. I got a little motivation to write this blog one as I am sipping on a detox drink and would like to share some detox drink recipes with you all to kick start January and the new year!
I am currently drinking...
Hot water
Lemon slices
Lime slices
Mint leaves
Cayenne Pepper
I Love it! It's refreshing but yet warm, and a much better alternative than most hot drinks like coffee and tea. This recipe is also just as great with cool water which i tend to have when the weather is a little warmer. You could also have lemon slices and hot water on it's own or add different ingredients such as honey, ginger sticks and/ora sprinkle of paprika. There are plenty of options to try...give them a go and see what you like best!
One recipe I think everyone will love is what I call the 'Fresh Fuser'.. it is so simple and easy.. oh and tasty! Simple chop up fresh fruits into chunks, a handful of fresh mint leaves and of course my favourite, slice up some lemon slices... put all together in a jar/jug, add fresh cold water and then fuse overnight in the fridge. Enjoy first thing in the morning or take in a bottle to work with you. You feel a new you after drinking a glass!
Another recipe I am enjoying at the moment that a friend recommended to me recently, is Green tea with apple juice.....Delicious! Especially for those who don't really enjoy green tea but would like to drink more of it... works a treat! Go easy on the apple juice though as it's high in sugar in high amounts. Grean tea is an antioxidant and has so many benefits which then leads me to the next question...
So, Why do i drink them?
Not only do I enjoy these drinks, the benefits are endless! Detoxing with various beverages is a great way to help give the body the nutrients it's really craving and can help aid digestion, giving it a break from breaking down and digesting food. The liver is the most important detoxifying organ in the body, so it only makes sense to drink fruits and vegetables to help it function at it's best which is why I love the lemon drinks so much as it is a great cleanse for the liver every morning! Having a class or two in the morning as soon as you wake also helps kickstart the metabolism which is extremely important, especially it you want to lose weight. Try having a medium glass/cup/mug of a hot detox drink before breakfast instead of your cup of tea of coffee (You can have these as soon as you get to work just give your body the best first thing in the morning). And as you probably already know these fruits and vegetables are great for your skin, hair and nails along with water... one of the best and most important fluids for health!
As for green tea.. I don't have all day to list the powerful health benefits but here are a few...
Weight loss
It is thought that the antioxidants catechins and caffeine in green tea may have a role in helping the body burn more calories – sometimes referred to as speeding up the metabolism – which can help weight loss.
Brain Health
Green tea does more than just keep you awake, it can also make you smarter. The key active ingredient is caffeine, which is a known stimulant. It doesn’t contain as much as coffee, but enough to produce a response without causing the “jittery” effects associated with too much caffeine. Green tea contains less caffeine than coffee, but enough to produce an effect. It also contains the amino acid L-theanine, which can work synergistically with caffeine to improve brain function.
Increases fat burning
Green tea has been shown to boost the metabolic rate and increase fat burning in the short term, although not all studies agree... I still like to drink it.
Reduce in types of cancer
Green tea has powerful antioxidants that may protect against cancer. Multiple studies show that green tea drinkers have a lower risk of various types of cancer
These are just a few of the benefits and to me they are all a reason to drink more of this green stuff! Like I mentioned before if you're not a fan of it try it with different ingredients, it will take a while to get used to the taste as our taste buds change.
